Odor Absorbing Plants

Here's a list of odor absorbing plants (in order of efficiency).
Something I think some rodent breeders and animal keepers in general would like to know and take advantage of.




I added a little Peace Lily to my animal room recently and it's working pretty well so far. If I can find a Lady Palm (no luck so far), I will be adding a few too.

I also know someone who added one of these plants into their rodent breeding room and they said that it significantly cut down ammonia build up and general odor. The difference was really noticeable just in a couple of hours of having the plant.

Totally no offense made but really it reduced odor in a rodent room. I know some plants can absorb odors but I would think the ammonia from a rodent room would be pretty hard to absorb. If this is true I've got to try it.

This list originated from NASA studies of plants that are able to remove chemicals from the air as part of their planning for long term space voyages. There's also a really good TED talk on improving indoor air by using plants.

Personally I just like having plants around, but it's nice to have them validated by NASA!

Edit: Just started thinking that everyone knows it's important not to smoke (whatever) around snakes, because they only have one fully functioning lung, but I bet they would also benefit from increased oxygen and cleaner air in general.

We keep our feeders in the same hot room as the snakes and have recently needed to deal with odor build up. I wanted to add some plants to the room for aesthetics but odor elimination is definitely a bonus. Thanks.

This is really cool! Definitely wanna keep it in mind. If plants can filter CO2 out of the air i'm sure they can filter out other stuff too. Ammonia smells are just gases too.
