Do they have to have a hide
The people on here that use racks or rubbermade totes do you put hides in them?

I do, but many people will just use them for babies, once established most adults are fine with just a water bowl and substrate if you're using an opaque rack...some people think it resembles the mammal burrows they often inhabit in the wild. Personally though I still recommend a hide or at least a nice bushy fake plant

I dont most of the time, but will if I have a problem feeder.
Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?
Never argue with idiots. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with their experience.

In my racks, I don't normally for my adults. The enclosed rack itself acts like a hide. If I have a picky eater, they will get a hide.
All of my babies will get hides too even if they are in a rack or a stand alone tub. They feel more secure and a secure baby is a baby that is more willing to eat.
So, established eaters probably don't need it. They may appreciate one though. And for picky eats, its is a must have.

Mine had them as babies and now that they are a few years older they still have them. They fit more like hats now but I don't have the heart to take them away. I don't really think you have to have them but they really are nice for babies and problem eaters.

As a rule I don't have hides in my adult racks, I've tried them from time to time but the snakes seem to prefer hiding under the paper anyway so why bother?

I do as all mine live in 41-qt tub racks once out of QT. I've also found a way to modify the large $3 plastic pet bowls from Target so they can perform double-duty as a hide even for the smaller adults.
