We have a macaw and would love to add a BP to our family
Hello everyone! My name is Pamela, and I hope to bring home my first snake ever, a charming BP, in a few days. I have a few questions, and am not sure where to put them in the forum - please bear with me.
Regarding BPs and other pets.... we have 2 cats, a dog, and a gorgeous macaw (Nimo). I am feeling a little paranoid on a worse case scenario..... If the BP escaped from it's enclosure upstairs, could it come down the stairs, try to climb into a parrot cage, and kill my macaw? Nimo is BIG and has what we refer to as the Beak of Death. He rules the house and all of the other critters are scared to death of him.
I know this sounds ridiculous, but I could never live with myself if something happened to Nimo because of a BP..... It's my number one nightmare, worst case scenario. Thanksssss, Pamela

I shouldn't think so, take real precaution in securing your BP's enclosure if you are worried and feed regularly. BP's kill when they are hungry, not for sport.
In all honesty I cannot see this happening. Perhaps if nimo was a mouse in the same room?

Very highly unlikely in my opinion. Birds are a predator of bps in the wild, not to mention that a macaw would have little or no trouble killing a bp, and from what I've seen of the behavior of my cockatoo, they will defend themselves most vigorously. No I didn't intentionally put them together, but my bird becomes visibly agitated if I bring a snake into the room. And as was already said, a good secure cage is the best defense in this situation.

Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?
Never argue with idiots. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with their experience.
Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

Honestly, I've seen the damage even little parrots can do, I would think that a Macaw would do more damage to a BP that a BP to a Macaw. Like Naom9anne said lock your cage up and you should be fine. I have 5 dogs, 2 lizards, and 2 snakes, I keep my reptiles in a seperate room and don't have any issues.

I'm sorry for sounding like such a twit..... I think that in reality, Nimo would be much more likely to kill the BP, rather than be eaten. He's a large Blue and Gold macaw, 1150 grams. All mothers have these crazy fears for their kids..... be they human, mammal, or reptile! Our daughter is excited about the BP, whom I've named Oliver. Isn't it funny how you can look at an animal and a name just pops in to your mind, lol.
Thanks for your replies :-)

no need to apologize, its better to ask questions and get the worries off your mind. My dad has a Meyers and Senegal Parrot, those are tiny to your in comparisson and my dads dog stuck its tongue in the cage trying to get seed and they put a hole in the dogs tongue in one peck so I have no doubt your bird would defend itself. Congrats on jumping into snakes!!

Re: We have a macaw and would love to add a BP to our family
Ironically I have found my self in the same postition. I have a senegal parrot, doja, and they are alot smaller than a macaw. When i first started consifering a BP I had some of the same worries.Personally I feel like If a snake a got to my girl, I couldnt do anything but blame my self. I would just make sure to double and triple check your enclosure even if you have not been into it that day.
I also had a another consern when I began my research, and that was cross contaminating. A bird with samonella would not be very pleasant nor would a snake with RI caused by dried parrot poo.
I would say as long as you have a good husbandy plan in place for dealing with each animal you should be fine.
Best of luck to the OP!

Oooh good point about the salmonella - my vet mentioned it the other day when I consulted her about adding a BP. She said to be sure to wash hands after handling the snake (Oliver) to avoid possibly contaminating the bird (Nimo). I'm immune compromised and wash my hands a thousand times per day anyway, lol. Also, Nimo is a very aggressive bird and I don't directly handle him too much - he's madly in love with my husband (and so am I!) and spends hours with hubby. Those two have a mad love affair going on - it's so cute!

I would honestly be more worried about the Macaw getting into the BP's tank if it's allowed to wander around the house. I'd suggest getting a fully enclosed terrarium for the BP to ensure it stays safe.

Yes, absolutely! I just posted about 2 that I'm considering..... Don't worry, Nimo won't be anywhere near Oliver's tank - they are in separate parts of the house
