Happy Snake

Hi Guys and Gals, I am a recently new snake owner and just curious how you can tell if a snake is general happy about his/her home?

Eats regularly, gains weight steadily, sheds well, spends days snoozing in their hides, comes out at night occasionally to poke around, doesn't strike, seem irritated, or seem scared when you open the enclosure to handle/change water/clean, seems calm when handling.

If they don't eat, it's not always a sign of something bad since they do go on fasts particularly at breeding time, but over the course of time they should eat fairly regularly and gain weight consistently.

If they're in shed, they may get grumpy and strike particularly when they've reached the opaque eye stage, but most times they should not be lashing out in general.

If they're hiding in their hides it usually means they're content. Constant wandering is usually a sign of either stress, bad environment, or hunger.

Every snake is slightly different, and there are always exceptions and odd circumstances, but over time those are the things I look for.

My snake usually hides all day long, and comes out either in the early evening, or early morning to poke around a bit. He usually enjoys attempting to climb up the sides of the tank to see if he can get out the top. He was especially hungry yesterday, and because I had the top open and his food next to his tank, he took the liberty to perch on the top of the tank to see if he could get to his food before it could defrost. (I had to pry him from the top of the tank and tell him to be more patient, he's like a little kid)

So if your snake is active when they should be and loves to hide all the time, then they are probably very happy.
