How to make holes in tubs??

I am wanting to make more holes in some of my plastic sterilite tubs. I have used drills before with no success (the plastic cracked). So I went and bought a dremel tool. I like the dremel tool but I am not sure that I am using the right connection because hot plastic was flying everywhere!! Does anyone know what dremel bit I can use to make nice CLEAN holes with no flying, burning plastic?! Thanks in advance!

your dremmel is probably spinning to fast. I have never had an issue using a drill on low speed putting holes in plastic, you could even try placing tape over the area you are drilling though. Another option would be using what is called a "step drill" which will allow for a pilot hole.

If you don't use a lot of force with a sharp drill bit and just let it spin for a second to get warm, ive had very few cracking or breaking problems.

I use a uni bit drill bit, it is one of the step up drill bits like has been mentioned earlier, works perfectly and I can make whatever size holes I want from 1/8" up to 1". Just remember don't force it, let the drill bit do the work and you should be fine, if you still have trouble getting the hang of it and making it crack, put a block of wood behind where you're drilling and it should help.

Soldering irons make a quick hole but, the smell awful and look pretty amateur.
Dremels will work but you want to pick the right cutter size and speed for the material you are working with.

Drills also work without cracking if you just clamp a board to the back side of the plastic. This supports the plastic as you push the drill through. The speed of the drill also plays into this but to a lesser degree than with the Dremel.
