I run 6" for the big 41qt tubs... the long ones... gives them a nice hotspot. Belly heat of course. 4" would be fine as well... just need to run it a degree warmer or so than the 6". Make sure you are running a good thermostat.

"12 for sure. Ideally you want to heat 1/3rd of the enclosure. Sure you could get away with less, but why? Those girls need room to thermoregulate.

Yup 12" is the way to go. I would only use 6" if my rack was in a heated room. I built it to stay in a bedroom so I went with 15" long and 12" wide strips to ensure a large surface area of heat to provide the hot spot and to keep the ambient/cool side temp up where it should be.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinkin 12 inch as well but since it is my first rack system and havent has bp`s for very long I wanted to ask. One more thing.. I guess a 12inch wide strip about 12inches long then? 12x12 inches?

Heat tape is sold by the foot. So the length of a piece of 12" heat tape is up to you. It can be as small as a few inches or tens to potentially hundreds of feet long. The only limiting factor is the wattage of your thermostat and the wiring in your home/building.
