First blood, Sumatran short-tail python (black blood), advice?

Finally got a blood. I've wanted one since I first saw the species in 2002 at a flea market in Ft Myers.

I picked up this girl at Repticon this past weekend. She's as tame as they come. Doesn't flinch when I walk by the habitat. Very calm when handled.

I plan on using newspaper, just got suckered into the coconut at the expo.

I've heard to wet down the cage just before shed when she goes blue. Other than that, humidity shouldn't be too much of a concern.

Also, she's been in her bowl approx 24 hours. I haven't noticed any mites on her. Anyone know how long is typical for these snakes to stay in their bowl?

Any advice is appreciated.

I give all of mine a water bowl big enough to soak in. Some never do others will spend a week or more in there.

I have 2 sstp (black bloods)
3 breits (borneos)
9 brongs (red bloods)
one of my sstp is in her water bowl 5 out of 7 days a week sometimes more. The male will get in his only right before a shed. It won't hurt them I pull mine out every couple of days to change the water and she's right back in. She has paper to get under but just enjoys/ feels more at home in the water I guess

Every short-tail and blood I've had used their hides extensively. They usually have their head sticking out, but it just seems to make them feel more secure. At least 1 hide on each the warm and cooler end is essential IMHO. If they soak a lot when not in shed it usually means either mites or they are trying to hide in there.

Mine do the same thing Jeff. It doesn't sound like the op has a good hide. My big blood I use a cat litter box on the warm side and a few sheets of wrinkled newspaper on the other. My young ones get reptilebasics hides.

LOL, I use to be 1 of those guys, politically correct.. BUT 3 fat people are 3 fat people so the term blood is cool by me for any of the 4 species.. Its not a good worthwhile fight so bloods or short tails they be..

IMO, Both Jeff and KMG are correct.. they do in fact like a snug hide and spent butter, yougart, etc containers work great with a hole cut.. With a small handful none of mine soak in the water bowls..The bowl is not big enough to fit them..
