Measuring Temps

Do I have to have a temperature gun or can I just lay my accurite with probe. In other words, if I lay the probe directly on the substrate directly above the flexwat is that good enough or do I need to use the temp gun to measure the substrate temp? The room is 75 and I've had to crank the flexwatt up to 100 to get 85F, is that normal and should I go a head and crank it up some more since the hot spot is recommended to be 90F?

Always have a temp gun. Thermostat is a good way to see your temp but a temp gun is 100 % needed. Are you using the flexwatt in a rack system? If you are the prove of the thermostat must be on the flexwatt it self or else it will not regulate the temp of the flexwatt correct and wind up burning your animals

How thick is your substrate? And what type are you using? I would get a temp gun. They're only about 15 bucks, and I like having one around to double check that everything's correct. Plus if I need to know the temp of something, I can get it instantly rather than having to rearrange a probe and wait for it to get a reading. Just my .02
