    Enclosure backdrops

    Hi,

I am thinking to switch out the backdrop in my enclosure. Currently it's one of those DIY styrofoam + grout deals. I switch it out pretty often because I can be a little over the top about cleaning sometimes and it bugs me that I can't put it through the dishwasher. I came across a tutorial on a backdrop made from silicone and substrate (I can't remember where, I was just something googled.) I thought it might be helpful with humidity as I would be able to mist it and I would think it would hold moisture pretty well (I tend to fight humidity issues and I don't mist the floor.)

I'm wondering from anyone who is familiar with these kind of backdrops, how well they actually hold up. Again I'm, of course, concerned with cleaning it (seems to me it would be a similar frustration to those horrid Exo-Terra jungle vines.)

If it would help with humidity, I wouldn't mind having to replace it every 3 months or so (I replace the substrate more often than that but since the snake wouldn't really be crawling on it, it shouldn't get too dirty, right?) or does this seem like a bad, unclean idea?

Many people with frogs make similar backgrounds and they don't need replacing. There are several tutorials on the site to help you out. It's just like BP.net but for amphibians.

    Thanks for that link.

Amphibian environments are much more humid so I get why they would be used. I know I haven't seen these types of backgrounds in snake enclosures much but I just thought someone may have some insight on them with regard to humidity since humidity is such a common problem.

Having to replace it isn't really the issue though. I'm wondering more about whether the effect on humidity would be worth it... Or if the effect would only be the equivalent of misting a tank (ie: just a quick fix but inefficient as a solution.)

If the effect would be minimal, then I'd rather just stick to the styrofoam way since at least it can be cleaned.
