heating pad...

I was wondering when using astroturf as the substrate could you place a heating pad underneath the astroturf of would it go under the tank? And does the same apply for a cali kings?

I always put my UTH under the tank on the outside of the glass.

i wuldnt put it right under the astroturf. if your snake got under it culd cause injury/death. i put mine under the tank and i hav no problems with it heating.

I wouldn't put it under the substrate either. Could get too hot, I would suggest placing it under the bottom of the tank.
