well, for those who have read my posts about bloods, then you know this. i somehow talked my mom into letting me get another snake. well i started looking into blood pythons. but, ive decided to go with a snake ive wanted for a while. im gonna be ordering a redtail boa from alex hue. i have a 3ft enclosure coming to me free (my cousins iguana cage) and it might come with heat lamps, so all ill have to do is slightly modify it a lil bit, put a lock on the sliding glass door, which if anyone has an idea on how to do it, please post and let me know, and get some astroturf for substrate. then its off to a petstore for any further needed items and some more mice. so probly be ordering in the next 4-6wks as i need to collect money. itll be fairly easy for me to do that, since im young and can be dumb enough to put my whole paycheck towards that

Nice. Good luck with your future snakey. Red Tailed Boa's are beautiful.
lol I haven't even gotten my BP yet, and I was already discussing with my Mom on what my next snake could be. I was mentioning to her that if all goes well with my BP, in a year or so maybe I'll move up to a Red Tail Boa(seems to be the next step up with snakes). Mom wasn't worried, since she knows I'll research my heart out to make sure I know what I'm doing, and hell, it's years away from now. She probably figures the idea will pass in time......

LOL...I think my husband keeps hoping for that, too! Poor, delusional man......
Rex, that's very cool about the BCI! You may have to do some cutting of that glass to get a lock on it, but it should be possible. Picture the kind of lock they have at a jewelry counter, or on the sliding doors behind which you find your gaming cartiges or current DVD's in some stores. Not sure how to describe it, but hopefully you get what I mean. You can probably find 'em at a hardware store.

If it is just two pieces of glass that roll or slide in tracking then you can go to Lowes and get a display case lock for around $6-7.00.

Might want to consider rats instead of mice, they are better for your snake. Just get a rat that is equal in girth to the widest point on your snake.
You might want to skip the astro turf as a substrate too. It is hard to get a tank to hold humidity with that stuff and every time one spot is soiled you have to pull the whole peice out and clean it. You could try news paper or cypress mulch as an alternative.
Look, sometimes bad things happen, and there is nothing you can do about it, so why worry?

it is sliding glass like that, and thats what i plan on doing. how do you cut glass?

the boas at alex hue are on mice right now so im gonna pick some up so i can make the transition in case the boa wont take the rat. rex also needs to be switched to rats, but im waiting for him to build up to small rats, as i have heard feeding mice to a young snake is a good idea.

i have astroturf in rexs cage and have no problem. my humidity stays around 55-60% and rex has had perfect sheds both times with me
judy, i know what type of lock your talking about. once i get the cage (hopefully tues) im gonna make a list of things that needs to be done to it. after my boa grows out of it, i plan on putting rex in there. thx for the help guys, ill keep ya updated

The locks I am referring to dont require any cutting on the glass. One part hooks on to the back piece of glass and the other piece, the lock part, slides onto the first piece after the doors are shut.
