Humidity???

I cleaned Twinkles tank out yesterday and all the temps were fine but the humidity was really high, almost 90%, so I gave it 24 hours, like suggested< and checked it today and its just over 70%.. Now I know that its good to be around 70% if she is close to shedding but shes not... Is there anything I can do to get it down to the right %? Should I place the hygrometer in a different area, right now its placed in the center of the tank near the bottom kinda behind the water dish...I just don't want it to stay too humid for too long and have ill effects on her... any help is appreciated TIA

Maybe your hygrometer is faulty. Do you have another you could use to compare?

What kind of setup? What kind of bedding?

Its brand new hygrometer I hope its not broken... I have dry aspen/coconut fibers, didn't have a enough aspen so I mixed was that bad? its a 30gal converted fish tank..
I'm going to be getting a different tank in the next few days..

Hmm.. Do you have the screen covered by anything?

If not, I think there is a problem with the hygrometer, unless your house is just super humid normally, which generally isn't the case.

Dito - most tank setups like this are too dry! especially with the heat lamps and lights above.

I'd suggest misting the glass and/bedding in a small area and see how long it takes to dry. If it drys in a few hours, I'd say there's a problem with the hygrometer or it's getting moisture on it somehow. What's your humidity outside the tank??

What's the salt test? And no there isn't anything over the screen, other than the light...

**For an Analog** <Works with digital as well but can't adjust it after and could damage the electronics inside.>Take the hygrometer and put it in a ziploc bag. Milk carton lid will salt, add a few drops of water, not enough to dissolve it. Let it sit 6 hrs. It should read 75%. Adjust it accordingly as quickly as possible when you remove it from the bag.

I suck at directions so you may want/need to google "Testing and calibrating hygrometers".

The hallmarks of a good hygrometer are easy, calibrate able a calibration screw to adjust the reading. They are very fragile items and should be tested at least once a year. (digitals require a calibration kit. $8+/-) Analogue ones should have a metal face card. Paper cards swell and jamb the movement. Digital units should be kept free of dust and dirt that can alter the resistance of the sensor.

IMO a high quality analogue will cost less and stand up better than any digital unit. Digital units go sour easily and are very fragile they simply do not stand up well. The last nail is that cheap digital units are not as accurate.

I guess I just needed to be a little more patient with the humidity... Its finally down under 60% so I was worried for nothing.. Thanks again for all you help
