Hungry Ball Pythons don't play !!

In the first place my Ball Pythons seem to KNOW when I have arrived home with plump, juicy mice....I guess they must actually be able to smell them all the way from my living room because as soon as I walk into the bedroom/snakeroom they are out and they all have that alert and interested look on their faces...but what really freaks ME out is that they get so wired that they will often start lashing at the air in their excitement to feed...I mean it is like, toss a hapless mouse in the lair and get outa there!!!!!!!! sometimes, they hit the mouse before it even gets its feet on the substrate. At times like this I try real hard not to smell like a mouse. Got to be careful about that as I separate my BPs at feeding time. Oh yeah, my BPs all live with each other. One big 50 gallon tank, two hides and they LOVE it. they spend most of their time all coiled up with each other sleeping but when it is feeding time they emerge and wait for me to get them into their own feed box and in goes a nice fat mouse...yeah, I feed live too...been trying to get them to take F/T but havent had much success....so I merely thwack a mouse in the head and while it is still dazed and confused I toss it in and its all over with in about 30 seconds. :wink:

Goblin always lunges out of his hide spot when I bring a rat over to his cage. He was off feed for the breeding season, but a few weeks ago he (all of a sudden) took GREAT interest in eating again, and he practically jumps out of the cage when I dangle the rat (just like my boa.)!

Heheheh, I love it when bp's are good eaters
My bp is fed in a seperate box and he knows once in that I will be lowering food soon. He doesn't even wait for me to lower, he raises up and strikes at it in mid air sometimes.

Okay I'm not criticizing... I'm sure you know how to care for you herps and do the best you can and I'm very glad you're trying to get them on F/T. But having snakes in the same cage carries a mess of complications I'm sure you are aware of. You may be anthropomorphizing a bit saying that they love it - in truth it likely does stress them out a bit but again I'm not criticizing I'm just saying that keeping snakes in the same cage isn't the best idea if you can provide another tank.

Hopefully this is not the case, but there is a chance that they coil up together because there is only 1 ideal spot in the enclosure and they're forced to share it. Unlike some other snakes like garters, I don't think Ball Pythons are at all communal in the wild. I just personally would avoid housing them together just to play it safe.

However, they do sound like they're doing well the way they are now so it's totally up to you and what you think is best for your snakes. Just wanted to give you a heads up, in case they ever develop any feeding problems.

Umm....urrrr...well, yeah I guess I have to agree with you on this..perhaps I should go to a rack system to house my herps.It gets costly and space devouring to have each one of them in an aquarium...And I suppose I have anthropomorphized them to a degree..I mean it is just me and my snakes holding down out here in Southern California and I sometimes find myself talking to them like they were my friends...sheesh...I need to get out more...

haha I talk to my BP as well haha. Yeah BPs aren't communal in the wild save for mating time haha. Anyways Eyelash I know you know what you are doing - just wanted to point out that caging together can cause problems but i'm sure you've read that sticky in husbandry. Sound like good eaters to me though so congrats on that.
