    Question Angolan Pythons Info needed

    Hello!

I am currently interested in an Angolan Python, they are gorgeous snakes. They almost look like Ball Pythons, but I am still some info about them that I cannot find on google as these species are not very popular. Every time I search for Angolan Pythons, only Ball pythons results are shown. I would to know if you an owner/expert of an Angolan Python could help me

1.How big do they really get?

2.Are they docile like Ball Pythons?

3.Are they picky eaters like Ball Pythons?

4.Would an Exo-Terra Large and Tall (36” x 18” x 36”) terrarium be ok to house a snake like an Angolan Python?

    5.Are they arboreal?

    6. Do they make good pets? I like to handle my snakes.

I adore my 2 Angolans!! This is a fantastic species to work with. I'll try to answer your questions....

    1) They get a bit bigger than balls. Males usually reach 5-ish feet and females can get 6-7 feet. Some don't get quite that large, but they can.

    2) Yes, they are very docile. Some can be a bit more aggressive, but generally they have great personalities. My female can be somewhat pissy, but she's great once I pick her up. My male is the most outgoing and curious snake I own! Even over my boas. He is ALWAYS coming out to say hi every time I open the tub. He even climbs over the rat to get to my hand - to climb out, not to bite, lol! I have to just open the tub and drop the rat in and close it fast. Silly snake....

    3) Angolans do not have the reputation for being picky eaters that BPs do. Mine will eat rats or mice and usually take it right off the tongs. Because mine are still quite young, and my male is so social, lol, I do sometimes have to just place the rat in their tub and let them take it on their own. But they always do.

    4) I would think that size exo-terra would do just fine for an adult Angolan. Most adults do ok in a 41qt tub just as adult balls do unless they get exceptionally large. If that's the case, a 4x2x1 (ie: an AP T8) would be most appropriate.

    5) They are not arboreal. They are native to the African grasslands just as BPs are and are not known for climbing much. Having said that, they can and will climb some if given the opportunity. But you should be careful to only provide fairly low and very sturdy climbing branches for them. They are heavy-bodied snakes and can be clumsy.

    6) Mine are excellent pets! Angolans have unique scales and have a beaded texture and are very fun to handle. They also do not stress like BPs do - they are quietly curious instead and are not prone to bite as they are generally quite calm snakes. They are a good size - large enough to be sturdy, but not unmanageably large.

They sound awesome. Just saw one today at our reptile store but $2500 was the price.

Our Royal is driving me crazy refusing food left and right. The Angolan sounds like the perfect snake but we have what we have LOL!

I love my Angolan pair! $2500 sounds steep to me though, I've seen adult pairs as low as $1200 up to about ~$1500 and baby pairs for ~$1000.

Oh man. Wow yeah they sound great. Hopefully in a few years the price will drop a little and I can get one.

Everything Kali said is right on.

I adore my yearling Angolan and plan on picking up a male this summer. I just wish she would sit still for a decent picture.

Just wanted to add to this, they're actually from a much drier habitat, rockier habitat than ball pythons and are separated from them by a pretty substantial distance. Hopefully this URL works:

Mine is actually a worse climber and less grippy than my ball pythons. What she will do, though, is sit on a tangle of maple root I have in the cage for her -- if you'd like to set up a display for an Angolan, think of flat, broad, sturdy props it can't knock over or get stuck in.

Thanks! Many Angolans will lighten with age but I'd like to think my boy got extra caramel-y/cocoa-y so far We'll see how little Mila colors when she gets some size on her.
