    Temperature reading question

I'm setting up two racks I purchased (AP 4xcb70 and RBI 4x32qt with a herpstat 2) and might get a baby rack way down the line.

I have a temp gun, as well as multiple acurite indoor/outdoor thermo/hydrometers. I am planning on setting one acurite up in each tub. However with bigger racks, I see a lot without any visable thermometers. Are there other methods of monitoring the ambients and humidity in the tubs with less total thermometers? My only guess is monitor the hot spots with the temp gun and otherwise keep the tubs set up identically to keep similar ambients/humidity, but I've also read about racks varying in temperature from top to bottom.

I am going to start by stating I dislike accurites all together.

I monator hot and cool and ambient temps in my rack. The top has both hot and cool probes, the middle has ambient air as well s the rack body itself. The bottom has cool surface probe. The rest have a travelling probe I move around where I feel the need.

IR guns are great tools they however are not highly accurate. They have a two degree error range add the emisifity of various materials and the reflection and refraction off angle. There is a wide range of possiable error. I love mine I use them regularly I just don't expect it to be spot on it is a good general idea.

Accurites, they have IMO an unacceptable error. The 8ºF window quoted from the specs is too much for me by a long shot. (specs are quoted in how much range over and under they could be, accurites say 4ºF over or under is acceptable.) I also have issue with the hazard presented by batteries inside an enclosure. Batteries in moist humid conditions can eak battery acid and noxious gas. I believe every keeper should have oe reliable thermometer to trust and use as a bench mark.

    Temperature reading question

It is a real problem. I personally am lucky and have platinum rtd that my business owns. In an ideal world every keeper would have something like it. Sadly this just isn't possible due to the high price.

My solution is to find a super cheap one that is speced at no greater than 2 degrees F out (+/-2f) and buy a bunch. Place them together and discard the wild ones. If you have a few accurites this could also be done but I still do not like batteries inside. Ideally 5 or more that should give a better range.

    Something like this

If you don't mind metric. When the cord gets damaged or it starts reading poorly I just replace them.
