    Am I doing something wrong?

I have a 1.1 pair in a 20 long right now and I have had them for a little over a month now. Last weigh in for the female was 240g and the male 255g. I have them on aspen and feed them high quality dog food (EVO) and lab block. I am still trying to get my hands on some mazuri. They have been together for 3 weeks at least and I still have yet to see any type of breeding behavior or my female blowing up. For all I know they may just not be sexually ready yet, but from what I have read they are of appropriate size. The female has kept a constant weight so I am assuming she isn't preggo, but I am new to the whole breeding game.

Was wondering if I could get some insight on whether I am doing something wrong or if I should just wait longer?

    Any help would be awesome!

    Thanks,
    Kevin

    wait a little longer
I would also get one more female or hold one of the girls back when yours drops a litter.

The female is a good size for breeding, so I think the problem might be the male. Based on his weight, he's capable of mating, but he's still relatively small and young. Since he's so close to her in weight, he's actually probably younger than she is. His hormones just haven't really kicked in yet. My males usually hit 250g. somewhere around 2 months, while females take about 3-4 to get to 240g.

I don't think it has anything to do with the weight of your animals at all. I've had 6-7 week old males (90-100g) breed with larger 200g females double their size with no problem.

You've only had them for about month. Most rats take about a month or two(sometimes longer) to settle in a new environment before they start to breed. I imagine, they'll be breeding very soon if they aren't now.

you are going to have to wait a little while longer for babies when they do breed it will only be 5 second normally you wont see them breed because it happens so fast and ur female will be prego for 30 days before she even drops her litter and then 4-6 weeks to ween the babies which if you keep the male in there ur female can get prego again right after having her babies and that will put alot of strain on the female being prego and taking care of all the babies im not saying there is anything wrong doing it that way because i know alot of people do keep them together

Gestation is about 21 days, and babies wean at 3.5 to 4 weeks. If you wait to separate babies past 4 weeks, you're risking unwanted pregnancies in the young females.

They are definitely the right size and sexually mature, when you say the female has kept a consistent weight do you mean she was about at the same weight when you acquired her?

Re: Am I doing something wrong?

Provide us with more details on what's outside that 20 long. Are they exposed to the scent of other rats?

Also, a high fat/protein diet can't hurt, e.g. eggs, seeds, greens, etc
