    Strange first feed

Hey guys, new here. Basically, I always wanted a snake and I just got my first one Monday (4 and a half month old normal ball python named Skully). Anyway, I've read a bunch on care and care sheets and all that, but something happened on the first feed that I never read about so I'm wondering if you guys could shed some light. He or she lives in a 10 gal tank, top covered with foil aside from vent, UTH, heat cable on sides of glass, cypress much, two hides and water dish, blue light I use at night for extra heat, 2 and a half sides covered. Temps read 88-93/80-84 humidity 50-60. Since I got it, it only showed signs of stress for a bit the first day (being in a ball in the hide, not going to the hide until nightfall), but from then on, it seemed totally relaxed as in, not looking for a way to escape, hidden all day and roaming at night (never saw it reach for the top of the tank or look like it was searching for escape). I stay up till around 2AM so if it did it after that, then I missed it. Anyway, due to that behavior, I decided to feed it yesterday night which would've been six days since last feed. Defrosted, took the food on tongs and dangled in front of hide and Skully got it within 10 seconds. After the strangle it looked for the head, I guess, and while doing so, suddenly striked at the vent I have in the top. It held that position with mouth open for 5-7 seconds then went down to, I can only assume, look for the head of the kill. It tried to eat it from tail end, spit it out, and continued looking until it then moved up to the vent again, although this time without mouth open. Couple seconds later, it went down, found the head and ate it, then went into the hide. Being that it is the day after feed, I assume things went well, but I am wondering if anyone has seen this or can tell me what went on? Did I feed it too soon? It almost seemed like a victory cry a barbarian would do over the dead body of a rival! This little buddy of mine has been nothing if not calm, relaxed, and basically awesome haha. Sorry but I don't have any pictures yet. Thanks for any insight!

    Re: Strange first feed

Maybe heat coming through the vent is messing him up?
I thought I read somewhere they go towards carbon dioxide to find prey too...maybe it's picking up on your breathing through the vent?

    Tough to say...
