Probing question...about probes?

So, we have purhased a herpstat and will bet setting everything up, probably this weekend. On that note, we wanted to make sure we are placing and securing our probes correctly from the herpstat to get the most accurate reading and to make sure we don't damage anything else. Any tips/pictures would be most appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

How is the rest of your enclosure set up? Mine is taped with a thin piece of foil tape to an area of the heat tape to the side of the tubs. The probe is not confined by the tub nor the tape, instead it is held loosely against an exposed portion of the heat strip.

Also, in this hobby 'probing' is the act if inserting a small metal probe into the vent area of an animal to check for the presence of hemipenes and determine whether the animal is male or female, so you might get some confusion on that.

Are you using the herpstat on a single UTH or a rack system? There are slightly different instructions for both.

Basically, you need to secure the probe on the heat source. For a tank setup, you need to put the probe between the UTH and the glass tank for that option. For a rack system, you want to secure the probe on the heat tape in the middle of the rack. You can secure the probe by using a piece of foil tape to hold it in place (but never if it's inside the tank...then use hot glue if you really want the probe inside the tank). Also, don't put the foil tape over the probe, just on the actual cord part. Otherwise you won't get correct readings because you'll be insulating the probe. For the rack, make sure the probe is not in the way of the tubs or else you could damage the probe.

Is it ok if the foil tape is on the heat tape? I know it is what is used to secure the heat tape in most cases, I just want to be sure. Oh and it's a 7 tub Iris cb70 rack from AP.

There is some debate on tape on the heat tape. I personally do but some say if the insulation is damage the tape may cause a short and result in a fire. Personally I inspect the heat tape monthly and feel this is a long shot at best.
