    cypress mulch question

Thinking of getting mulch from home depot instead of pet store. Should I bake it to prevent parasites or maybe spray it with PAM? Anything else I need to be worried about?

    Re: cypress mulch question

Here's a link to a product I've been using since last October. I never treated it in any way. I've got mites only once in 6 months, but it was weeks after a bedding change so I don't believe they actually came from the mulch. I think it's a great product especially when combined with some coco fiber. It holds humidity pretty well and is pleasing to the eye. It is made for landscaping so you gotta pick out a few big pieces of wood, other than that I have no complaints. And you can't be the price. It does however come in a 35+ lb bag so you'll need a BIG(40 gallonish) plastic container to hold the stuff not in use.

I bought a bag of cypress mulch from lowes--different brand name here but guessing it's essentially the same stuff. I was a little worried when it said blend that it might contain other woods. They told me if it did they would have to list it on the bag. Looks like it should be ok. Thanks.

it does look good, but by the time you pay shipping costs not sure it's worth it. And mail a check or money order? Seriously? They may want to update their payment methods.

    Re: cypress mulch question

How many snakes are you housing? Unless you have quite the large collection, the big bags at the pet store have always done me wonders. I spot clean most EVERY day and do a full change out/scrub down once a month. I looked into ordering in volume, but like you said, by the time you pay shipping and you really don't know what other stuff they have added...

According to the manufacturer it 100% cypress. The term blend refers to the sizing of the material not being uniform. It other words its exactly screened to a particular size or double milled or anything since it's intended purpose is landscapping. At about 1/10th the price or better seems like a good bargain even if you have to pick through it and pull out a few bigger pieces.

I buy the same stuff from Lowes. I just pull out the HUGE pieces. Other than that, I just throw it in an mist for when my ball pythons are in shed.
