hey guys, just a quick question on my heat. Ive got a heating pad on the warm side, hooked up to a controlling thermostat (doesnt seem to work very well), and a 75w heating bulb in the middle of the screen. I have two temp probes on the warm side, the one from the controlling thermostat says it is 79 degrees, however I have a nice digital probe that says it is right about 90. If I ditch the controlling thermostat and just pay attention to the digital one, will I be fine? I know the risks of heating pads getting too hot so I just dont want that to happen, but it seems to be working very poorly.

Heating pads MUST be regulated by a good thermostat. Without one they can and will get hot enough to seriously injure your snake. (I've measured them at 130+ degrees F)

What type of thermostat are you using? Not all thermostats are created equal.

Where exactly is the probe?

How thick is the substrate in the cage?

well the substrate is about a quarter inch think. the thermostat regulator does seem to be working now though. looks like the hot spot is right about 90. another quick question though, I have the basking temp right, what is the easiest way to keep the ambient temperature up? It seems that the warm side is 80 and the cold side is 72. i have a 75 watt night bulb heating lamp on top

I use a herpstat 2 with my glass enclosure, one for the UTH and another for my heat lamp. Heat lamp is used for my ambient temps.

If you can't put your lamp on a tstat I would use a dimmer.

okay yeah, I have mine hooked up to the tstat as well. I moved up to a 150watt to get that extra needed heat so hopefully that will do it and not suck out all the humidity

What kind of substrate are you using? Eco earth does a good job holding humidity.

thats exactly what im using. it has just been hard with the heat lamps but i think i have it figured out. these glass tanks are a pain.

and another side note: its truly amazing the difference between one of the thermometers you get at petsmart that just sticks on the glass and a more expensive digital one. My digital shows a 4 degree difference and a 10% humidity difference! learned my lesson to not buy those crappy ones

Are you talking about thermoSTATS or thermoMETERS?
