Dethawing rats in the fridge?
So I was talking to a friend today who has five ball pythons and he was telling me he dethaws his rats in the fridge the night before he feeds. He was saying it helps quicken & even out the warming up process. I had never heard of anyone doing this before. Is this safe?

It's perfectly safe. The rats will stay a bit fresher too.

This would be the approved method of dethawing in human based foods so if its good enough for us then its surely good for them! Socially it may not be approved by your dinner guests however , but hey what they dont know is next to the milk won't kill them! Lol.

^^^ Opaque sealed containers help with not offending guests.
It is good enough to defrost a chicken for human consumption and it is good enough for my snakes.
Being thawed before warming allows the internal temps to come up without "cooking" the exterior.

It's actually probably safer to defrost overnight in the fridge, especially with larger prey items. If you have a large frozen rat, and you put it into warm water, the outside of the rat is going to be at ideal bacteria producing temperatures for a long time before the inside is even thawed, much less warm.
The safest way to thaw frozen meat is to put it in COLD water until completely thawed, changing the water several times to ensure it stays cold, THEN placing it in warm water to heat it up. However, I don't know anybody who actually does that.
To me, it's easier and safer to put the prey in the fridge the night before, then all I have to do is warm it up when I'm ready to feed.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. ~ Herm Albright

Lol My wife freaked out when I did this but the thawing process is kinda delicate you can cook the outside and prey will be refused unless your animal isnt picky.
