Hey all,
Have been cruising the sites trying to find pics of spurs of males and females for comparison. Now I know this is NOT the best way to sex your bp, but I'm bored and curious! My local pet store is out of snakes, and I have read and been told that the males have slightly larger, more curved spurs than the females do........I just haven't had the chance to be in a pet store that had two bp's of a different sex at the same time to compare (small town, ya dig), and pet store people seem to just look at its bum and say "yup, that's a male....or yep, that's a female" as if they can really tell that easily.
So if any of you that have a male and a female would you do me the huge favor of posting a pic of each of thier spurs? I cant' seem to find any anywhere and it would be kind of nice to be able to pick up a bp and get a fairly good guess as to whether it is a male or female before probing. Some pet dealers just don't know what they have in stock and it would be swell for people to not have to take the pet store guy's word on a visual sexing only to find out when they take it to the vet after purchase that they bought the wrong sex!
Again, I do know that probing is the best method.......but this is a fairly well-known indicater. So can we do a little herp "myth-busting" and compare some spurs?
Whatcha think?

there was a picture in the Reptiles Magazine (the one with water dragon on front. i think)
it shows a great picture of a male and the spurs, doesnt show a female, but im guessing that if it doesnt look like that, than its a female. and i heard that you can barely ever see a females spurs.
my ball python is a male, becasue it looks exactly like the picture, i know i can never be 100% sure without it being probed, but im like, 98% sure

If you scroll to the bottom of this page, you can see the pic I scanned in from the ball python manual comparing the tails and vents of males vs. females. It's not spurs, but it might help out.

Thanks, Marla! That's pretty helpful, having one right next to the other. There appears to be a pretty good difference between those two snakes. Was pleased to see the animal sold to me as a male does indeed resemble the male's money shot more than the female's.......

Excellent! Glad it was helpful. That shot is why I think my newest bp is female rather than male, but I really need to get that confirmed.
