Ball python hissed at me after finishing eating?

So i know sometime ball pythons can get a bit grumpy, but this has never happened before. My ball python (Bernadette) had just finished eating (like she had already fully swallowed the rat) and she was moving around to go back into one of her hides. So i grabbed the lid of her tub to put it back on like i always do, and it sounded like she hissed at me? She was doing that thing where it looks like she is yawing to re-align her jaw and while she was doing that she made a hissing sound. Then it looked like she was going to do that yawning jaw re-alignment thing again and she made another hissing noise. This seemed weird to me because she NEVER hisses; the only other time i can ever recall her hissing is the very first day my husband and I got her, and we've had her for about four months now. I'm not sure if maybe I startled her when i went to go put the lid on because i suddenly appeared in front of her tub and she was facing the front of her tub at the time? And she had just finished eating so maybe she got into a little bit of a defense mode? Could that be it? I just found it odd because she has such a calm and mellow personality and never hisses so I just thought it was kinda strange behavior for her. What do you guys think? Thanks for your help!!

Yea she just got defensive. Eating is a time when they're really vulnerable so they're always more nervous.

Ball python hissed at me after finishing eating?

I've heard my snake make some super weird noises. One night I hear the awfullest noise like my ball was coughing up a rat. All raspy and nasty. It woke me from a dead sleep. I flip the lights on... Big ole' steamy pile!!!

With feeding her might have pushed some air out.

My guys noise still didn't match pooping! I've checked for RI, so I know it wasn't that.

But yea, my two cents! ;-)

Oh i wasn't handling her or anything, this happened while she was inside of her tub. I just had the lid off of her tub for feeding. I don't like to put it back on while she is in the swallowing process because I don't want to accidentally scare her, so I usually wait till she is completely done swallowing before i put it back on. Obviously me trying not to scare her didn't work this time I guess ha. Sorry for the confusion, but yeah I definitely always wait a full two days before doing any handling after feeding day.

Alright that's kind of what I was figuring. I just wanted to check since she has never done this before. Thanks!

LOL I've seen so many posts on here about other people's ball pythons making the grossest noises while going to the bathroom, and I have yet to hear my girl make any of those noises yet! Should I consider myself lucky? Haha I'm pretty sure that would absolutely freak me out if i heard any noises like that in the middle of the night...i suppose we've only had her for four months...oh goodness

Re: Ball python hissed at me after finishing eating?

I do the same thing after a good meal. I hate it when I eat a nice steak and my friends keep bothering me as I go into a food coma. Although I usually ball up on the couch under a blankie.
But seriously she just ate a meal and they cant really slither away as fast as they can so they get a little defensive

My mojo likes to hiss sometimes, I think he just likes to show how tough he is. I dont think its anything to be concerned about, some are just more vocal than others.
