Leaving my python home when I go on vacation?
I know it's still months away but I plan on taking a vacation this summer for about 2 months or a little more. I'm going to another country so I can't take my bp with me. She is young now, maybe just a month or two. I'm wondering if I can leave her and she will be fine, or if I need to find somebody who will come feed her. Will she be okay if she doesn't eat for that time? I would be getting somebody to check up on her tank, heat, and that she hasn't escaped no matter what, but I have trouble finding anybody who is willing to touch her or thaw out a rat and feed her.

You need to find someone to check on/care for the animal.........responsibilities.

Re: Leaving my python home when I go on vacation?
For a ball that young, 2 months with no food is a long time to not eat. Babies don't have the same fat reserves an adult has to withstand that time period without eating.
I recommend someone feed her at least once every 2 weeks to keep her in good body condition. At the very least.
And if no one would touch her, how will they clean her enclosure if she soils it?

She's going to need water, cleaning, and yes, food. Though they 'can' go for months without eating, that's neglect if you just plain don't feed them that long. You may try looking into a local herpetological group or see if there is a breeder nearby that you can trust to take care of her for the time you are gone.

Reptile specialty stores will usually board an animal as well.

I am in Newfoundland.
And in response to some others, I don't think that there are any reptile specialty stores around, and if the regular pet stores would take her for the summer I don't think I would trust a place like that to care for my pet when I would't buy one from there. The breeder that I got her from may take care of her for me, but if that falls through I'm sure I can find somebody who will care for her.

Re: Leaving my python home when I go on vacation?
you definitively cannot just leave her alone for that long.
i dont think the snake would starve, but dehydration might kill it, fresh water in a clean water bowl is something ball pythons really need and depend on.
so someone needs to visit your home and take care of the snake, or you need to give the snake to a breeder or pet store or to another reptile keeper. otherwise, first the snake runs out of water, then humidity in the tank drops dramatically, and then its still one more month... impossible. That scenario could even knock out adult BPs in good shape that could easily do without food for 2 months.

I would get someone to look in on it. There are ads on kijiji for pet sitters that may do so or you might be able to contact Little Rays Reptile Zoo Newfoundland and ask them if they know a person whom would. It is likely you might be able to talk one of their staff into doing so. I believe they are on facebook and hopefully listed in the yellow pages. Jungle pets may also be able to help. That is off the top of my head I'll post any others if they come to me.
