cypress mulch?

I was at a local hardware store today and noticed that I could get a large bag of cypress mulch for less than the usual bags of forest floor or reptibark that I normally get. Is there any reason why the mulch would not work? It looks very similar to the forest floor that I use now.

Lots of people use cypress mulch for bedding, but you need to be careful with it...it can have bugs and what not in it...but i've used it and never had an issue with it

The only reason why I'd personally stray away is because there could potentially be pesticides or some unsavory little bugs crawling around in there. If they're selling mulch at a hardware store, chances are it's intended for use in your yard, not in a pet's enclosure.
Granted, I know some people will just go pick up soil from gardening suppliers for use in terrariums so just like, tread carefully and really make sure that there's nothing that could end up being harmful if you end up going for it.

I've been using cypress mulch for 20 years and have never had a problem with it. I've used it for ball pythons,burmese pythons,reticulated pythons,blood pythons, monitors and leopard geckos.

After some experimenting I've found the best product for me is HAPI-GRO Cypress Mulch Blend. It's got no dyes and I've yet to see an insect in it. This product is made for landscaping, but is great as a substrate. Holds humidity well and is pleasing to the eye. You can't beat 3.48$ for 3 cubic feet. It comes in a bag that is over 30 lbs so you'll need a large plastic container (40gal +) to hold the excess. I bought my bag back in September I think, and I still haven't finished using it. I do full bedding changes about every 5 weeks in a 10 and 20 gal long so this stuff lasts a while.

I use the cypress mulch from Walmart mixed with coco bark. I generally don't worry about bugs too much, since whatever is on it is probably not going to be a huge problem for the snake, like whiteflies or beetle type thingies. I do open the bag and let it sit for a couple days before I need it though because it's always really moist and makes it too humid in the cages if I use it straight from the bag.

I've mixed it with coco fiber too. Does wonders for high humidity animals like the blood python I had before. Minimal misting kept my humidity at 70% and it stayed for days at a time.

That's what I use for my snakes. Now, I don't use it 24/7 because I prefer newspaper in my racks, but I do put it into tubs when the snake is in shed because it holds humidity pretty well. Not to mention, it's cheap!

Just try and make sure to get some Eco friendly stuff without pesticides or chemicals. I've used it with no problems. In general I use aspen because it makes cleaning easier but the mulch looks better for a display cage.
