    herpstat question

so i just ordered my first rack (yay!) and I'm looking into thermostats. originally i was going to go with the ve200 but am now leaning more towards herpstat. i'm kind of confused though on the differences between the herpstat 1 and the herpstat 1 basic. from reading the stats on spider robotics website i got the idea that the basic had a night drop feature. i don't need humidity control so i was going to go with the basic, but i ran across this thread: http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...tat-1-vs-Intro in it, The Serpent Merchant says the basic does not have night drop.

on the website though it says
    - The device adds a software clock that still provides plenty of configurable night time transition settings.
and -User selectable temperature and light ramping allows day to night changes to occur slowly. (Up to 10 hours)

does the basic have the night drop built in? if not, the ve200 plus the night drop module would be about the same price as the herpstat 1

The herpstat 1 basic has a software clock that allows night drop functionality. This didn't use to be the case.

The biggest difference between the herpstat 1 and the herpstat 1 basic is the lack of a safety relay that will cut power to the thermostat in the event of a failure on the herpstat 1 basic. (prevents the thermostat from failing in the on position)

Personally I would get the herpstat intro + or the herpstat 1. The models without the safety relay aren't cheap enough to make them worth it to me.

The herpstat intro + will do what you want it, and has the safety relay that the herpstat 1 basic lacks.

    I replaced my VE-200 with a Herpstat 2

a- because I need to power 2 racks now
    b- because i needed a t-stat for my incubator
c- because the safety feature discussed above is invaluable. Snakes die to overheating MUCH more than underheating.

This is copied from the basic's user manual:

IMPORTANT: This device uses a software based clock. Instead of a hardware based clock chip this
devices uses a software based clock. This works the same as most alarm clocks by counting the pulses on your
households electrical line which is regulated by your power company. In most cases this provides a very stable
method of keeping time. However, when power is disconnected the thermostat will not continue to keep track
of time. On power up the device reverts to the Day Temp and the Nite Cycle options are disabled until the
system clock is set. This method allows the Herpstat 1 Basic cost to remain low while still providing some
additional advanced features which would not be otherwise possible.

So, yes there is a night drop function. But if you have a middle of the night power outage, it will revert to daytime temps until the system clock is reset properly.

IMO I would go with the Herpstat 1 Basic over the VE any day. I'm swiftly becoming a Herpstat fangirl.

Edit: Yes, actually, I agree 100% with Aaron. I derped and completely forgot about the relay being in the intro+ now

    herpstat question

Herpstat is leading the safety features race big time. The ecozone and herpkeeper have the best communication systems (they remote monitor and email alerts)
Helix is the longest on the market and is time tested.
Ve is the newest and playing catch up to everybody else.

I have a few Herpstat 4s and about 5 Herpstat 1s. I have never had a problem with them.

I have a ton of Herpstat Intros (hah, 5 maybe?) and 2 of the older Herpstats. The Intros are AMAZING for their price, I think!
