rat breeding Qs
Ok quick question.....
lets say I have my whole rat situation all set up (racks, ratio of Male to Female correct, water system...etc etc)
What do we do with the youngin's as they grow up and arent immediately used for food...at the correct growth/time stages?
do we separate out the baby boys from their baby sisters?
will rat siblings breed with each other once they reach sexual maturity?
I have been assuming we separate them and raise them in separate racks?
(im not breeding or even close...just want to get a few questions answered)
Thanks!

hey buddy! The weaning stage once it gets out of the mother is around 4 weeks. Day 1 of the 5th week is the perfect time to remove them. As a fact, you should know that they can start breeding (and you'll know earlier than 28 days if they do.) In my case, I'd separate them and wait til they're around 8 weeks old and i put them back together to do the nasty. haha You can keep the youngsters with the adults but do try to stick with 1 gender if you're not planning on breeding them. If you don't, even the male youngsters would mate with the mom and that's just no good. Hope i got most of it bud!

Put them in separate bins to grow up to the correct size.

Yes, yes, and yes
Why keep a snake? Why keep any animal? Because you enjoy the animal, find something beautiful and fascinating about it, and it fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Re: rat breeding Qs
Yes I separate at about 4-4.5 weeks or when I see all the babies eating solid food I had an incident which required me to put all my grow outs into one tub for about an hour 4 weeks ago, the grow outs were about 7-8 weeks old at the time. Well I cam home to a very unexpected litter Monday night seems while I had them all in the same tub the brothers (not sure which one) got busy with one of the sisters . I separated the new mom into her own tub and she is doing great but I had not planned on the litter and it was a little bit of a surprise. Need less to say I will be feeding all the babies and mom off as soon as they are up to size.

I always wonder on this topic...
The right size to gas and feed a BP are like, 6 or 7 weeks old. So why don't we just leave the growouts in there until they are ready to be gassed? The females might be in early stages of pregnancy, but so what?

I separate once pups are weaned. I generally just remove all males. Siblings can breed as young as 5 weeks of age.

You don't want males fighting and killing each other for mating rights. And pregnant does tend to feed more than normal. So you're saving your snakes' resources as well as your rats. And pregnancy hormones stunts growth.
