    Finding urine

I'm a new BP owner. Given that I'm a little OCD when it comes to cleanliness, I have a random question. Is there any way to "see" a BP's urine on their substrate? Can you use a blacklight or something to see which area is soiled? I can smell it but can't tell where it is.

What kind of substrate are you using? You'll be able to see urates no matter what substrate you use since they are solid balls of chalk-like material. As for urine, you'll just have to sniff it out or change to substrate. I used to use aspen and now I use newspaper. I love it and it's really easy to spot when you need to change the bedding. The only time I use substrate is when my balls go into shed. Then they get cypress bark to hold humidity.

You should be checking daily for urates and stool. You wont miss the urates, and most of the time you'll smell the stool as soon as you open the cage.

I use coconut as my substrate. I like it because it looks nice and holds humidity well. That said I have been considering a switch to paper and moving to the coconut when she's in shed. Thanks for the reply to my crazy question!

I check daily - the urine is the problem.

I would switch to paper towels or newspaper. Since I switched I LOVE the newspaper. I check my tubs daily and clean when necessary.

How do you keep the humidity up when you use newspaper?
