"Today, the Madison area Herpetological Society took in a rescue in bad condition. He is severely dehydrated, thin from lack of food, both of his eyes are infected and filled with puss, and the infection has likely spread through his blood to other organs. We always try and help the reptiles out there in need, and this case is no different. However, it really brings up a point for me in how we care about these creatures. Reptiles are too often seen as a throw away pet, a creature who's life isn't worth much and if it passes away, it's no big deal. They are often an impulse buy for a child and end up neglected. This is not always the case, as you will find with our members, who take immaculate care of their beloved pets, but it does happen. This snake we rescued is a prime example of why we need to continue to get out and educate people about the proper care for their reptile pets. For anyone out there looking at getting a reptile for a pet, please do your research first. Talk to breeders, buy books, look online, don't just show up to a pet store and ask someone a few questions. You may find out that person telling you what you'll need, actually knows as little as you do. Also, realize that just like with any other animal, it may need veterinary care, and be able to afford to care for it properly and get it any attention it may need."

Anyone that would like to donate to MAHS to help us spread education or to help with the vet bills for animals like this, please visit the link below, come to a meeting, or contact any of the board members. Thanks!

Also a big thank you to Dr. Michael Wenninger at Spartan Animal Hospital for donating his time to help us in giving these amazing animals a chance that it deserves!
