Question!!
Okay, I know I've been spamming the forum lately but I'm having a rough time with my newest rescue. My apologies.
So I was speaking with a vet friend today and she says my newest rescue (a female BP about 1100-1200 grams) is suffering from second degree burns that she acquired somehow with her previous owner. She recommended soaking her twice a day in a light Betadine/water solution for 10 minutes to help the burns. Because this new rescue has also graciously brought some mites along with her, the vet also suggested adding a few drops of Dawn dish soap to the solution to drown off some of the mites. She says it would be best to avoid chemically treating the mites until her burn has healed, which makes sense.
Another friend has suggested using a lice shampoo called "Nix" mixed with water to kill off the mites on my snakes and in their enclosures. He says it worked great for him.
I'm just wondering...would treating this poor rescued BP with both a Nix solution and a Betadine solution cause any issues? I certainly don't want to make things worse. Lately I've been keeping all my snakes on paper towel, baking and bleaching their rock hides and water dishes, soaking the snakes in warm water, and scrubbing the heck out of their enclosures.
Any suggestions??

I'd say one thing at a time. Deal with the burns and get those healed up first and foremost, then deal with the mites. Mites are annoying but in terms of being a major health issue aren't as much cause for concern as the burns are. I would follow the vets reccomendations: Dawn dish soap in the mild Betadine solution to drown and heal. That will kill off most of the little boogers that would be bothering her and then you'd just be left to deal with the eggs hatching in a few weeks. As for Nix, I'd stay well clear of that, especially with her open or partially open wounds. You start mixing chemicals that are meant to be topical for the treatment of lice on people and she absorbs them...that wouldn't go well. I know people use it and all but I also know people who eat Big Mac's three times a day and haven't yet had a heart attack. Just because you can doesn't mean it's the best thing to do or that you should. Provent A Mite (P.A.M.) is the tried and true method for mites. It's expensive and can be toxic if you don't use it properly but so long as you follow the directions you'll be fine and mite-free in short order. Again, I'd get her healed and healthy then deal with the mites, annoying though they are. Practice good quarantine procedures and hopefully keep them from infesting the rest of your collection in the meantime. Good luck!

Nix is a chemical, and a nasty one at that. If vet recommended no chemicals, I wouldn't do the Nix yet. I would think that would sting in the burn. The drop of Dawn in the soaking water will help drown the mites, and give her some relief from the mites, until you can treat for them. Also, make sure she is properly quaranteened away from your established collection, so they hopefully don't get the mites.
