What lizard would be best?
My husband and I have an empty tank, and like all tanks it should be filled with another herp.
I was pushing to get a kingsnake, but my husband has been hinting at a desire to get a lizard. Since he has allowed me to get 2 (soon 4) ball pythons and 2 rosy boas, I decided it would be good to let him get a lizard.
So far I've pulled up some of the caresheets on this forum for him to read. He seems to be leaning toward bearded dragon, uromastyx, leopard gecko, and crested gecko. I also had him list out some of the attributes he wants in a lizard, so we can determine what species will be best for us. He wants:
- easy to handle
- remains tame, even if it isn't handled daily
- easy temperament/docile
- doesn't get too big (about bearded dragon size max)
- desert/arid or temperate environmental requirements (doesn't require high humidity)
- preferably colorful (but this is a bonus)
The tank we have is 36" long, 16" wide, and about 17" high (approximately equivalent to a 60 gallon). We do have a secure lid for it, and we can buy whatever furnishings are necessary that we don't already have (UTH, heat lamp, UV lamp, hides, substrate, climbing branches, whatever the lizard will need). We are prepared for either an omnivorous or vegetarian lizard (we have a vegetarian desert tortoise and mouse/rat eating snakes already, so won't be anything new!). We do not want a monitor lizard, green iguana, or chameleon. In the past I've had leopard geckos and a uromastyx, so I won't be entirely new to those. I have limited experience (from working in a reptile store) with the other lizard species.
What do you think would suite us well?
Why keep a snake? Why keep any animal? Because you enjoy the animal, find something beautiful and fascinating about it, and it fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.

I highly recommend a bearded dragon. I've had mine for four years and she's super sweet and a good personality. I go to college and she stays with my parents house, I only see her weekends and during breaks but is always friendly and non-aggressive without daily handling. She's by far my favorite pet. She falls asleep all the time on my shoulder when I hold her at night.

With that type of of tank I would go with a breadie or leopard gecko.
If I was going to go with a lizard I would go with a crestie but you have to keep their humidity up. Also I think it's better to have a taller setup...?
I haven't had any lizards in years. I remember my bearded dragon being stinky when he made a mess.

Bearded dragons are awesome! Another suggestion I would say would be a Blue tongue skink. They are super personable, love head scratches, and come on.. they have a blue tongue! Its hilarious watching ours explore, flicking his tongue like crazy. I would definitely read up on them!

I'm going to put my vote in for bearded dragon. Some of the new(er) color morphs are smokin!
