Snakes and dogs?
So my dog, Oryx, has been back with my family for the past two years so that I could finish school without dog responsibilities. I'm graduated now and was going to try to bring her back with me next time I get down to my mom's house. I'm getting a snake later this month, and was wondering if there was any danger in keeping dogs in the house with snakes. Oryx is almost 8 so she's not a puppy anymore, and is pretty relaxed in her old age and incredibly obedient. She is quite big (Great Pyranees mix) though. My bedroom (where I was planning on keeping the snake) is a loft space and so it has no door to close when I'm not home. I don't think she'd actually mess with the snake, she's a pretty lethargic girl and probably won't even notice it's there, I"m just wondering if the presence a large dog would be a lot of stress for a baby python, and if I should look into getting a gate for the entrance to my bedroom. If I should, does anyone know of a good gate for a very big dog? I've never had to use one with her before, so I don't know what will keep her at bay.

Re: Snakes and dogs?
I have a shepherd/cattle dog mix who will actually sit next to my big normal girl's cage and whin until I open the cage to let him see that she is okay. He could care less about the other snakes. He must know that she is my oldest baby. He just sniffs her and goes on his way. I actually think they both are okay with each other.
Are you planning on getting a BP or something else? I had a rescued RTB who was so laid back that he could have probably laid with a dog and been fine. I think it all depends on the animals and how they are personal. Good luck!

My dog ignores the snakes but crys over the rat tanks haha an if its a height issue I put one baby gate on top of another to keep my pit in one room cuz she can jump over one gate easy not saying it holds her tho cuz she just runs her head into gates or doors until she opens them like I've watched her run into a door so hard to open it that she had to lay down for a while

I've already bought a BP, I'm just not having him shipped right away because I'll be out of town for 2 weeks over Christmas. RTBs were definitely my second choice though! We'll see what happens once I enter the void of Herp love, might end up getting more in the future.
I'm glad to hear that it's all right! I've been missing my pup the past two years!
Mebigbadbrat: That is so adorable.

So far my dogs don't even notice there are snakes in the house, they could not care any less. The snakes don't seem to be bothered by the dogs either.
The gates will depend on your dog. I can prop a low gate up without even securing it and my dogs will leave it alone and not pass. other dogs however would have no qualms against knocking it over or trying to jump over.
Why keep a snake? Why keep any animal? Because you enjoy the animal, find something beautiful and fascinating about it, and it fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Re: Snakes and dogs?
Yeah. They seem to be fine together! Or at least mine are good together. Now, I wouldn't trust my mom's little terrier/poodle/chihuahua mix but I do my shepherd mix. He is probably the smartest dog I have ever owned! I am shocked every day with him.
You know those heat temp gauges that are yellow? The ones that have the laser in it to point in a cage to tell what the temp is? Well, Bear, my dog, thinks that is a toy. He will run after that darn laser like it was a tennis ball. He has even learned that it goes on top of the snake cage. If I touch the top of that cage without opening it, it runs over and sits then whins like okay where is that laser or Nacho (my biggest girl BP).
Man, I love my pets!

My Scotties are fascinated by the snakes, they sit there hypnotized at night when the snakes come out (which is why the snake cages are way up high until the rack comes), so I just don't take the snakes out unless the pups are in their kennels. But Scots are not particularly smart/have an incredibly strong prey drive. I know loonunit has a lab and who gets along nicely with her (totally awesome plethora of) snakes. From the dog point of view it seems pretty specific to the individual dog. From the snake side, none of them seem to notice or care that dogs exist.
