    Day Job Scares

As my day job I work at a full service boat yard/brokerage in a smaller island town. The boat yard is open M-F, but the fuel dock they maintain is open 7 days a week, so I'm usually the only one here on weekends. This time of year it's not the most exciting job (winter weather in Pacific NW = less boaters... or none some weekends) but had a pretty heart stopping experience this morning when a 30' sailboat that was staying on the dock for the weekend broke loose except for the bow line. Let me tell you, haven't had an "oh crap" adrenaline rush like that in a looooong time. Dunno how many of you are familiar with boats/boating, but we have a nasty warm and wet southerly tearing through here perpendicular to the dock out into the fairway. Just glad the boat didn't break loose completely and have a mosh party with the brand new 44 Jeanneaus in the slips across the way. Or drift into the boats of the people who live in the marina. Bad bad bad news either way (thousands of dollars bad news).

Moral of the story: If you own a boat, always give your lines a good once over for fraying, or get new ones if you have any doubts about them. And get a spring line (or... y'know, three) when you know bad weather is coming.

What kinds of things do you guys have to deal with in your day jobs?

I'm going to school to be an auto tech. So not much to worry about just the usual getting crushed by a car, electrocuting myself, and burns to name a few.

No kidding! I just run/maintain the fuel dock, but the mechs, electricians, woodworkers and even the paint/sealant guys who work here during the week are always around that stuff. We've been lucky for a few years, but before I was hired on here they had a guy who was run over by the 50 ton travelift. He's alive, but can't walk. It amazes me how absent minded people can get around heavy machinery of all types

My day job is CNA so deal with a decent amount of things that make you go ewww but I just started volunteering as an EMT little bit ago and that's filled with fun nothing too terrible yet like no missing body parts but its fun, once I get national certified ill be able to take my own rig now I'm just the third in the rig. And my mornings are filled with school emt/fire fighting school the emt part will be done with next month once I get certified so nervous for that test!

I work with lots of chemicals and macheinery together sometimes. I had a bad chemical reaction once with a maintence (new person) using my chemical mix sink to empty the mop bucket with bleach in it. One of the chemicals reacts with it and releases very very toxic gas (cynaide gas ) that was a scary day. Thankfully no one was hurt and nothing much came of it (big sign NO BLEACH).

I worked at a Marina in Michigan when I was a teenager. I was a detailer. I always wanted to pump gas instead. Jealous!

I used to be in the Sea Scouts (part of the Boy Scout Venture program, it's a co-ed organization that specializes in sailing/boating/water-related stuff), and I know I used to hold my breath when the new kids would get to steer the boats by docks/other boats. Boats aren't really known for their "turn and stop on a dime" capabilities...

Nothing like putting the siderails underwater when you catch some great wind though.
