BP is out and about a lot

So, Kaa has grown quite a bit since I've last posted! But I come to you with a new problem, he is moving around and isnt in hides any time I've checked in the past few days. I had a lamp on to try and bring up the temperatures because they were dropping and so I turned that off because I thought the light may be bothering him. But the temps dropped too low so I turned it back on (it didn't work anyway). My temperatures are 79-81 on the cool side and 89-91 on the warm side. Humidity is 59%. Can anyone think of anything that might be wrong?

Sounds like your temps, humidity, hides & everything's ok. When mine seem agitated & husbandry's ok, I often find they have gas. Try pressure all down the tummy. If you hear squishy, gurgly noises, then it's gas. I'll stroke a BP rather hard along the tummy for a while. Be careful of the backbone. Also, be ready for them to void. It may be yucky & smelly, but it sure seems to make them feel better. Good luck & hope your BP feels better soon!

What are you using to monitor temperature and humidity?

I see my Bobba out an about sometimes, and he'll come out if he hears me rumbling around my room. He eats fine, an has perfect husbandry.

Im using an Accu-Rite thermometer and a Hydrofarm for my thermostat. So, pretty much what almost everyone here uses.

Gas? That sounds.. strange, can anyone else confirm this?

There are a lot of reasons why they will wonder. The pace matters is the snake tongue flicking the whole time or not? Does the activity seem rushed jerky or smooth and causal? Has he been feeding?

it is possible that the animal is just curious.

Hydrofarms are not known to be accurate at all, I would not trust what ever it reads I have checked 7 units (new and improved ones LOL) and not one was correct. Accurites are cheap digital thermometers with a simple resistive chip. The accuracy is spec'd (I have been told) at 2ºC up or down this is a very wide even if it is the 2ºF I believed it is still quite wide. The problem with what you are describing is you have nothing of known value to check against. The easy option is buy a traceable high accurate thermometer but almost all baulk at the price, I actually would not suggest this route but a more accurate t-stat would be quite a lot cheaper. The not so great but less costly option is to buy a pair more thermometers of your choice (better would be 4 more...). They can be checked against each other any that appear incorrect can be discarded. I personally find accurites to be grossly over priced, I usually pay 3-5 dollars for a dual hygrometer thermometer of the same (if it is 2ºF) or greater (if it is 2ºC) spec'd unit.

I'm sorry, I didn't think what I said was strange, but maybe you're right. Maybe my bp's just like to be petted. BTW, a lamp isn't the best way to heat. A good source of space heat along with an UTH is best. Also, I agree with kitedemon about Hydrofarm, temps swing too high & too low. Good luck!

I know lamps don't provide a lot of heat. My windows in my house are awful as well as my room has 2 outside walls, and on top of that, I live in Wisconsin. I'm doing what I can. And if hydrofarms arent at all accurate, then why does half this website suggest I get one? As well as the accu-rite. Now I'm just angry, almost EVERY single post in a thread I made earlier suggested both of these. What the hell.

Personally, we use to only recommend things like helix, herpstat, or ranco, but the new generation of Herp owners seems to be much younger and unable to afford these. Living with parents and such. So it seems that cheaper products are more prone to being suggested now. We also recommended getting a temp gun to double check any readings that your accurite was giving you. Again, not a cheap unit.

Okay, so can anyone suggest to me a more accurate thermostat and thermometer for a reasonable price?

Also, if anyone can offer any insight as to my problem instead of just saying what I'm doing is wrong when that's what I was told to do by 7 or 8 different people, that'd be much appreciated.

Also, I keep my mice in the same room as the snake (my room), could this possibly be why he isn't eating? I have no where else to put the mice..
