I use a red UVB light for added heat day and night supposedly animals don't notice it, so you can just buy that one instead of night/day lamps.

    Re: Night Light

I use Exo-Terra 75 watt red bulbs on both my terrariums. They work great for keeping my temps about 90 hot/80 cool and they run day and night. My snakes wander day and night without regard for the light. I also have them on Exo-Terra Large Light Brackets. This is great for managing temps since I don't need Tstats on my lamps. If they're running a couple degrees too many above or below normal, all I have to do is adjust the height of the lamp to increase or decrease temp.

The lighting isn't really for heating, more for just observing.. would blue or red leds work?

This is slightly relevant to my interests, since I'm an LED junkie; just re-checking... LEDs would be ok as for 'night lights' to be turned on 24/7?

If so, what would the maximum 'safe' Candela rating for each LED be, and would any colors be preferred (besides aesthetical preference)?

Red and blue are preferred because the light is not very visible to animals, so it will not mess with the snakes day/night cycle.

As far as candle power. I guess that would really depend on how large of a tank your lighting and how many LEDs you plan on using.

Ideally the light is just enough to let you see, not see well, not to the point of seeming like a red sun is overhead.

I would also suggest red over blue. Unless you have a snake with white in it the blue lights really seem to camouflage the snake in the shadows. But for something like my gtp that has white triangle going down it's back the blue light looks awesome making them glow.

    Re: Night Light

The red shouldn't bother them at all, but I have a red heat lamp for when the temps get too low, and I find it bothers my eyes a lot. I have issues seeing proper colors for several minutes after watching Penny with her light on for a while. Maybe green? But if you want to see your snake in all it's colored glory, white might be best.

I think you missed the point of the psst.

You want to provide a proper day and night cycle. The OP is asking about lighting the cage at night. If you put a white light at night it would cause your snakes to stress. The day/night cycle can really become important if you are a breeder.

As far as your red light messing with your eyes. Does it have UV properties to it? Or is the light in a position that you are seeing directly into the bulb?

The red and blue for that matter should not effect your eyes, that's why they are used when you need to preserve your nightvision.
