I believe those are Hummingbird Moths.

I thought they were young hummingbirds too the first time they showed up here! Cool little suckers, they seem to love our salvia and moon vines.

You may never have the opportunity to see one, but Luna moths are also pretty mammoth.
There really are a lot of very cool insects as well if folks ever get tired of snakes.
Did an insect collection project in 6th grade. 27 years old now, still have that thing in storage somewhere.

I use to see these things all the time when I was younger and we had moon flowers that grew in the back yard.
