    News from Rusty Reptiles

My snake died. I noticed Monty hadn't moved at all since I woke up early this morning, he was just kind of curled up in a corner of his tank and I thought he was sleeping. So I kind of touched him just to see if he was okay and he didn't react. So I picked him up and he was all limp. Definitely dead. I have no idea how this happened. He hadn't eaten since I got him a month ago, but I thought that was okay. The vet checked him out when I got him too, and said he was okay. My temps were fine, I don't know what went wrong. I got him from a pet store, so I guess he must have been sick or something. Or did I do something wrong? I am so crushed.

That is horrible news. Sorry for your loss. Just hope that it does not deter you from owning any herps in the future.

So sorry to here the news Gen. I know I'd be devastated if it happened to me. I hope that when you're ready, you'll keep another snake.

From what I recall of your posts, it sounded like you were right on top of your husbandry, so don't nlame yourself. These things happen.

I'm sooo sorry for you. I know what you must be going through. I had the same experience when I got my first snake, a cornsnake, which I think died of starvation and stress. I've heard that corns are very picky eaters. With the store that I bought it from, they have a 7 day money back promise that if the animal you buy dies within that time, you can get another one free. It didn't eat at all during that time so we notified the store on the seventh day that I had him. It died the next day. Becuse we called in, I was able to another one. The same thing happened to him. It was 2 years later and I got my bp which I still have today.

Again, I'm very sorry for your loss...

I'm so sorry, Gen! That really sucks. Like the others here have said...I really don't think it was anything you did. From everything I've read from you, it sounds like you were doing everything just right. He could very well have been sick with something caught at the pet store. IBD is very contagious and the stores aren't known for keeping their herps isolated. From what I understand, IBD can kill a python quite suddenly.

    Gen:
Man I feel so bad, as if one of my pets had died. I doubt highly it was anything you did or didnt do as I know youve been posting here and learning as much as possible and BPs are pretty forgiving of husbandry errors.

I know this may seem difficult to do but my personal advice is to jump right back in, order a BP from a good breeder like NERD or Alex Hue. Keep asking questions, and keep that chin up. Youll get another healthy BP, and you will have success with him/her for a very long time.

Thank you so much for your replies. It helps to hear your feedback. Iceman, he did see him eat at the store. I saw him eat the day before I brought him home. But he was still pretty thin, I don't know how regularly he was eating. I don't even know what to think. It helps to know that you guys don't think it was anything I did. I WILL get another snake. I just don't know where and how soon. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my dead snake. What do you do with a snake when it dies? Oh I feel so terrible.
