    Unknown parentage

If I buy a snake and its a pastel and the seller doesn't know what the sire and dam were and I breed to my normal not knowing its parentage but get morph babies can I sell them as morphs?

Well... that would be bad breeding. Or at least not knowing the possibilities of who the parents are. As long as it is a guaranteed Pastel, and not a normal its self, you will produce Pastels and Normals if bred to a Normal.

Why? Why does it matter what the parent are? If you buy a pastel you know that at least one of the parent was a pastel or a pastel combo so I am not sure why it would be bad breeding?

To the OP if you buy a pastel you buy a pastel, you buy a pastel dam and sired are irrelevant, it would only be relevant if you were buying a Pastel carrying a recessive gene as well.

It is possible that the breeder paired several male (pastel or pastel combo) to a normal female and he is not sure which male sired the clutch.

Not knowing who neither one are indicates someone who likely re-sell animal as most breeders keep good records when it comes to their clutches.

Bottom line you buy a pastel and you pair him to a normal you will produce pastel and normal.

He is selling me the snake for 50.00 bucks it looks like a pastel but he's selling him to me as a normal because he's a friend and also because he wasn't given the papers on the snake.

You do not need papers on a Pastel, a Pastel is a Pastel or he is not, there is not need for guaranteed genetic, as for the price $50 is the going rate of Pastel, normal going rate is $20 for a male.

You don't need papers on a pastel, it is either a pastel or it's not.
Make sure you google pastel pictures before being suckered into buying a normal as a pastel.

My guess is that bsash breeds or has experience breeding other species (ie, dogs, cats, small mammals, etc.) where it is considered very very bad to breed an individual without knowing who produced it and its lineage.

    (That's my guess anyway.)

I agree with everyone, it's either pastel or not. Do you have a pic ?
Some species you really like to see the parents before buying(chondros, carpets) but ball pythons don't fall into that category for me(unless I'm buying hets). It's nice to be able to see the parents but it's not a deal breaker for me.

It's a deal breaker for me on super forms, pastels and Morph het's.
Super forms while pretty do not show the quality of offspring they will throw.
Two very blah yellowbelly's can make a super pretty Ivory...

Yes, that is what I was getting at, thank you. I know with the snakes it is not so important about the lineage, with dominant/ co- dominant genes, but it still is with hets. And in my opinion, even if it is a "Who's you daddy clutch", they should still know the possibilities of parents, if not be able to tell which they came from.
