More Anime Stuff
So I've been watching Ranma a lot. About 130 episodes in. I also found Tenchi Muyo on Hulu in raw form with subs. And I am just amazed at how much editing Funimation did with Tenchi. And I know why Ranma never aired here. Why?
Female nudity.
Not in a porn way. Actually, it's mostly funny when it happens. Especially in Ranma. While it's only in a handful of episodes, I don't think the scenes would be as effective without them. I knew years ago that Japan (and East Asia in general) had a different view of nudity than the west. At least for the most part. But it can still be eye opening to watch.
I've also finally confirmed my suspicions on what nosebleeds in anime represent. If you didn't know, it's basically the animators way of telling you that the person (nearly always a guy) is turned on. It's easier and less awkward to represent it that way. So now you know if you didn't already.
Oh I just finished watching Corpse Princess. I want more! The ending just left me hanging. I understand the manga continues but I want more of the anime. It is rather recent so maybe it will get picked up.
What else...oh yeah. I have someone grown to enjoy Baka and Test. This is despite it being what the name implies: Stupid. But it's grown on me a lot. I find it funny. Everything from the fact that Aki is the stupidest person on Earth and somehow attracts all the hot girls in his class to the guy named Hideyoshi who is constantly mistaken for a girl and is given his own bathroom. Not just at school but everywhere Sadly only the first season is on Netflix.
I've also confirmed that Japanese has as much slang and in-formalities as English does. The best example is the commonly heard "Sou ka" which translates to "I see" or "Is that so?" The formal way to say this would be "Sou desu ka?" But in almost all cases the "desu" is dropped.
Oh, don't what Clannad After Story. It's so depressing. It actually made Chanin cry.

Ranma has boob in almost every episode (especially in the manga, since he likes to hang out shirtless as a guy and gets water splashed on him at ever possible chance, haha), and there's so much accidental and intended groping and grabbing that I think they just gave up on the idea of editing it and just decided never to air it. They'd have to edit EVERY episode! It's a shame, 'cause it's one of the first ones I ever read and has a special place in my heart.
I usually see nosebleeds in shoujo ("girly") mangas used as a comedic relief sort of thing. They're thinking something they know is "inappropriate" about their crush and get a nosebleed, which then brings on a whole slew of "omg how improper of me!"s, or any other number of responses. It all depends on the character/genre. Usually girl nosebleeds are not as epic as guy ones.
Yeah, they use a lot of slang nowadays. The most famous is probably "kuso", which most fandub translators use as the literal "crap" or "sh*t", but actual companies like ViZ make "damn" or "darn". Really it's so versatile that it can become pretty much a blanket expletive, whenever you wanna curse, haha. It's used pretty much anytime things don't go the way the character wanted.
I don't watch much anime anymore, I just read manga, because I'm so impatient to know what happens next! I can read a volume of manga in about 10-15 minutes, so I'm practically bouncing in my seat when I have to sit through 30 minutes of an episode. Although I do like seeing some things put into action.

So I spent most of yesterday watching more Ranma and now Elfen Lied because some folks here recommended it. Needed the escape from the whole closing thing going wrong.
Elfen Lied is mostly great! But! But! I think it goes too far sometimes with the visuals. I can handle grown adults being hacked to bits but I think they went too far by showing kids in the same manner. They could have just said it or have it be implied without actually showing it. There's also some pedo bear scenes that I thought were a bit much. Again you don't need to show certain things. Still the story is compelling and the animation top notch. I just wish it didn't go as far as it sometimes does.

It seems all the quality adult themed anime are short lived. Like Corpse Princess, Kaze No Stigma...
Actually it doesn't appear there are any long lived anime anymore aside from mind numbing kids stuff like Pokemon. Inuyasha was the longest series outside of Dragonball Z I've watched. I guess they just don't make them like they used too.

Fullmetal Alchemist is pretty gritty at times. And Code Geass is one of the best animes I have ever seen. While Code Geass isn't really adult in the sense of nudity, gore, or speech, the plot is fairly sophisticated. I highly recommend it.
If you read manga, Death Note is excellent. The anime was horrible in comparison and don't recommend watching it. It didn't give off the same intense feeling as reading.
And yeah. American companies censor all the good stuff in anime.
Viz animation is pretty bad too. I remember sending letters as a kid to Viz complaining about how terrible their translations were.

I never could get into FMA. A couple of my friends love it though.
And by adult I don't mean nudity and such. I just mean in story and dialog. While some anime have silly elements like DBZ, Yu Yu Hoskusho, and Inuyasha both have adult or universal themes in them that adults can enjoy.

So now I've watched 2 seasons of Baka and Test. Such an addictive show. Apparently there is a season 3 but it hasn't be subbed anywhere yet that I could find.
11 more episodes of Ranma and I am done with the show. I also recently found the dubbed version. I can't stand it. Worst voice acting since the infamous DBZ Big Green Dub. So I''ll stick to the Japanese.
Started watching Rorouni Kenshin again. Haven't in about 10 years. It's a show I prefer in English. I hate Kenshin's Japanese voice. Sounds like a girl. I don't like it when a show's male protagonist sounds like a girl.
I am recognizing more Japanese words as my vocabulary grows. One thing I've picked up on but don't understand yet is that people with refer to people not related to them as relatives. It seems every old man is called "Gramps" or "Grandfather" even though there is no relation. And close friends will call each other "Brother" or "Sister." At first I thought it was a joke or just slang but in the context it seems that those titles are given to the people out of respect more than anything else.
The cultural journey continues....
