Helix
hey Just wondering.. In my cages I have flexwatt tape under a tile... I also have a helix thermostat. I have the helix set to 90 but it's heating the tile to 104 not sure why. the probe is on the tile so how is it that the thermostat reads 90 but the tile reads 104? what should I do to make sure the temp on the tilE MATCHES THE TEMP ON THE HELIX?

Place the probe on the flex watt, not the tile. If your thermostats is reading the temp of the tile there are more things that can effect the temp. Tape the probe to the flex watt, and then your tiles should read around 90.
What are you using to measure the temp of the tile?

Because I'm assuming your using ceramic tiles, when hot they act as radators. I have them in my bd cage, when the hot spot is 110 the tile are 98, and there is a good 10 inches from the lights. And they stay 85+ degrees through out the night with no lights on.

Another thing to keep is the accuracy of your temp gun, we have 2 just to make sure

Helix have very accurate probes. I am not sure how the probe reports to the unit however. Herpstat probes have the chip in the probe so the cable is only carding data. If the helix does not do this changes in the cable could effect the temp (like most digital thermometers)
IR guns usually have a 2 degree up or down error rate. They also are very specific in the reflective and mass qualities of the target material. The easiest way to eliminate this is to place a bit of brown paper down and wait. Then target the paper for the temp reading. My guess is that it is not wholly the gun or helix but both. A little off one way the other off the other totals to a fair bit.
