    It depends on your budget.
I recommend any of the Herpstat models. The entry model is $99.
Helix is also a reputable thermoatat.

I love the herpstats and they are very affordable compared to most of what's out on the market. I use them on all of my racks and incubator. Not sure what the model number is but here's a pic.

You have asked for recommended so I will give you my suggestions.

Herpstat would be the number one. It is packed with features and the 1 model and higher have extra safety features that are not found in any other (relay under shut down)

The ecozone the price is fairly high but it too have advanced features the most useful being internet reporting.

The herpkeeper also has a large amount of advanced features and settings it does not have as many as the other two, most are not necessary for royals the alarms are useful (the fore mentioned all have them too however)

Helix the grandfather of them all. A very simple reliable unit. No features to speak of it is a bit dated compared.

VE200+ this is basically a copy of a helix, with out the track record, it stacks unlike the helix, the others also stack.

These are all proportional units. In a single tub in a unregulated room I would not suggest an on/off type as they can have dramatic swing under these conditions.

That is one of the older models perhaps the first model I am not sure this version is currently discontinued replaced by a much smaller unit.

If you need a T-stat for an oil filled heater (common among rack owners) I would suggest a johnson or Ranco for that. I never trust the 20¢ thermostat the manufacturer uses.

    Re: Recommened thermostats

Thank you all for the great information. I think I am going to go with the Herpstat 1.

Good choice, it offers more safety features than any of its competitors and at only a tiny bit more.

Both of the thermostats I have are herpstats and I like them a lot. One is like the one pictured (now discontinued) and the newer blue lit herpstat 1. They are proportional, making them very accurate as well as good for an incubator. They also don't click on and off. The setup is very easy and they work well.

If you don't want to or cant spend the 110 dollars. I hear the reptile basics VE100 or then ranco is good but have not used them. They are the off/on style.

    Re: Recommened thermostats

What model On/off thermostat do you recommend as a backup for a Herstat 1?
