    Pastel Identification

Question: Does every line of pastel have a greenish eye? Are there any single-gene pastels that don't have the green eye?

I used to think all Pastels had green eyes. That was what I had been told. However, recently it has been brought to my attention by much more experienced people than I, that not all pastels have green eyes. I have as yet to see this phenomenon, but I have no reason to doubt the people who have told me this.

If you are asking this question with a specific snake in mind, would you care to share photographs of it ?

One thing in pastel id that I recently learned about, is looking for the "brown out" line. That almost seems to be a more "visible, stand out" way to tell.

The snake in question is not mine, and is believed to be its own morph. The owner would like to do some more breeding to try and figure it out, so I won't be posting pics.

If there is a line of pastel that has black eyes, then this possibly is the most browned out pastel line I've seen. It's definitely a morph, but we can't seem to find any that it looks like. It is at least a dominant gene, and possibly codominant. The original sire looks nothing like a pastel, or like a browned out pastel. The sire and the morph babies don't have green eyes. I lean toward thinking it may be vanilla, but that's inconclusive at this point, too.

Basically, in an effort to rule out pastel, I was hoping to hear what I suspected--that all pastels have greenish eyes...maybe not.

    I see.

Again, I have not yet personally seen a pastel who did not have green eyes. BUT I have heard from people with much more experience that there are pastel's who have dark eyes.

I do have some vanillas of my own. Traits they share include a very faded head, even golden-yellowish body coloring, some flames and the blushing is usually reddish tinted. Just to put that out there.

I wish your friend all the best with his project.

Yeah, I really lean toward vanilla... But there are a few things on these that kind of say it's not vanilla. I'd really like to see some pics of vanillas fresh out of the egg. These have a faded head. Right out of the egg, the faded head looked like a pastel's faded head - blueish in color. Now after a shed or two, the fade looks more on the vanilla's color side... I'd like him to pair it with a fire or a vanilla to see if it makes vanilla creams, or if it makes super vanillas.

I've also never seen a pastel with black eyes.
