Digital cameras?

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good camera to use for taking pictures of herps (and animals in general). I want something a bit basic but more advanced than the dinky little digital camera I've been using all this time. I guess I'm looking for suggestions for beginner cameras? Anyway, I'm interested to see if there are any photographers out there with some input. I'm not really sure what kind of budget I have at the moment so any ideas would be considered.

DSLRs can get very expensive. My advice to you is start with a crossover camera. Its more than a point and shoot but less than a DSLR, both in price and functionality. A DSLR for dummies type book may be beneficial as well. There are some really nice point and shoots that do almost the same stuff as DSLRs now adays. I would suggest going in to a local camera sales place and playing with their cameras for quite a while, to see what you enjoy the most. Good luck!

Panasonic GF3, I give you my highest recommendation for this model. This is a used model from bhphoto that is relatively inexpensive with lens kit 14mm which is 28mm on the 2x crop sensor. More advance than a basic point and shoot. Not as advanced as an SLR, but gives you the option to upgrade your lens!

Little bit more zoom option - less quality optics in the lens though, but great price point from what these cameras use to retail for!

Whatever jinx has always takes nice pics and i believe he uses it for his vids too. The vids are always nice quality too.

I believe when i asked before he said it was a plain old point and shoot sony cybershot. I think he said like $300 bucks or so was how much it was.
