Will He Get Sick?

This is the second time this has happened to me, for some unknown reason we got a power surge and even though I have a surge protector,one of my heating pads is plugged into a lamp dimmer. So when the powere surge happens the lamp dimmer comes back on but the heating pad shuts off.

Well 2 times Ive come in Plisskens room only to notice ambient temps at 75 and his hot spot at 75 since the heat pad had shut off on me. Emediately I turned it back on to get things warm again but I hope the drop in temps wont do any damage to him. :cry:

As long as the temps don't stay that low for a long period of time (a day or more) than it should be okay. If it happens alot, an RI could stir up. Just check the heatpad often if possible. Which side does he lay on the most? What you could do is buy those heat packs that are used for shipping (there are 20 hour and up kinds). You could put one of those under the enclosure when one of those power surges happen, if you can. The only thing you have to be careful of is those can get 110 degrees on the spot, so wrap it up in paper towels and put it under the tank. That might help.

That sucks, I hope they don't happen anymore.

You could invest in a UPS...Uninterrupted Power Source...which is like a surge protector with a battery pack built in. We have all our computers and entertainment equipment hooked up to them so that if the power goes out, we have time to shut everything down properly before losing power completely. An alarm also goes off to let you know that power has been interrupted, so even if you don't notice the power flicker, you may hear the alarm and check to make sure your heating equipment is still operating properly.

I'm with Judy. An Uninterruptible Power Supply is a very good thing to have high-priority electrical items running through. You can get cheap ones for $50 or so, but bear in mind that with UPSes, price is almost always directly correlated to performance, unlike the difference between a $50 pair of shoes and a $500 pair of shoes.
