What made you choose a large snake?
Personally, growing up, my cousin has a beautiful burmese python and ever since then I have always wanted one. But one day, I'd like to raise a family, and because they live so long, I would hate to have a snake for a very long time and have to give it up because I have a child.
But what makes them so appealing to you. I think they're beautiful, powerful animals that are amazing to be around and watch.

I plan to have one some day, along with my children. I don't think people have to give up big snakes when kids are involved. If anything it's an opportunity to have young people who know better than the media circus and are able to spread the positive side of large snake keeping. There are definitely precautions to be taken, but it's also a big lesson in responsibility
Seeing as I don't have one yet, can't actually answer the rest of it, but just food for thought

I never imagined I'd get into the giants when I first started out with snake keeping, but their beauty and lets face it: their sheer size is what drew me in. I know of the commitment they need and I felt I was/am ready to take on a giant and couldn't be more happy with my little retic girl who's just over a month old now. Retics are some of the most beautiful snakes IMO and I'm lucky and fortunate enough to own/keep/afford one. Plus I have no plans on having children so my girl's size down the road won't be an issue in that department either.

Well when I'm done having kids and my children are older, I have no problem owning a big snake. But because small children tend to be curious. I don't want any accidents to happen. Once I can teach my kids the responsibilities and safety precautions when it comes to them, I won't mind them having the experience.

I think the biggest thing is their stunning beauty. I agree that retics are some of the most beautiful snakes in the world. Their colors and patterns are amazing. Plus just the size of them, it's almost majestic lol. But I did get a male because I feel a female would be too much right now.

I originally got my burm to get her out of a bad situation. I did not intend to keep her when I got her. After dealing with her for a while and getting her healthy I couldn't let her go. Just so interactive and fun! Plus taking a bite from her once I realized its nothing to fear. Respect but not fear. My boys are older, 11 and 14 so they have a healthy respect for her, but again, not fear. I don't know what the right answer would be as far as having a baby with a large snake. Personally I would have to guage it on the individual animal and my own comfort with my own habits and responsibility.

That's why they make enclosures with keyed locks, and doors with locks, and tall play pens.

Re: What made you choose a large snake?
That's a tough one to answer. I never was one into the snake aspect of the reptile hobby to begin with. Most of my effort and study went into monitors. Several months ago I ended up using literally all of my money to get myself off the ground and get a place to live- and in the process lost all but a single one of my monitors. Fast forward to a couple months ago, I had someone offer me a 12' albino burm for $200, seeing as though I had many friends with males, I decided to put my foot into snake keeping again with this "investment". Although I ended up with both a 12' burm and a young anaconda. I can't say that either of them really did it for me- or still does.
I told myself many years ago the only snakes I ever wanted as "pets" were either king cobras (lol) or a retic. I found one locally for $100 for a 14' tiger. I keep him in my living room, with locks on the cage. We have a bunny and 2 cats and never worry about it. When kids come into mix I'll be adding double pad locks and moving him into a locked bedroom (so they can't accidentally let him out with breaking the cage). Kids aren't a good excuse not to have a big snake- if you take care of it properly and teach the kids early to respect the snake. But this tic def has me hooked
