Hi, I have been learning how to care for my BP and for the past few months I have
found most of the info from BP net. after lurking around I finally joined. I have had my BP since
this past februry when my wife all of a sudden decided it was ok to get one. Not wanting the opertunity
to get away, I rescued mine from petsmart.
With a book on BP's and a caresheet that petsmart thinks is correct (its not), I headed home with a new snake. I quickly learned that I needed more information and that my setup for the cage was not up to par.
I made the beginner mistake of trying to house the snake in an aquarium since I had one at home
with matching stand. I even went as far as to make a screen lid to replace the glass canopy that
the aquarium came with. I have a pic of that below. as you can seen I have since added foil to help
retain humidty which I learned from here.
My BP is named Racer. I do not know the if the snake is male or female. My 5 year old son came up with the name. He also thinks that the snake is his. I am from South east Georgia. I live on the st Marys river and grew up catching wild snakes and have always wanted a BP and a few others. Growing up I was not really allowed to keep one so it was always a catch and release program. Well I finally got to get one and some pics of Racer are below. One is of him on the couch and the other is in the critter tote when I had him out to clean his cage and make changes to it based on the information I have learned here.
My terrarium is a 46 gal which I know is alittle big since racer is still young but I have to make it work and so far it has. I blacked out 3 sides with double sided tape and construction paper. I have a UTH but its not on til I get a good thermostat such as a herpstat or vivarium. I have also added the acurite thermometer that has the probe and does humidity. THe acurtie showed me how hot the uth was getting with nothing controling it so I unplugged it. I hope to get a good thermostat soon.
It's finally good to be part of the snake community and I hope to learn alot and enjoy my BP.
