Inconsiderate People
Thsi is just me venting...
So my wife's birthday is this Friday. We had plans to celebrate. And now we don't. Her work schedule has changed 3 times in a week. First she had Friday off. Then she didn't. Then she did. And now today, she doesn't again. And she has to work till closing which is 9pm and too late to do anything.
I am pretty ticked off about it and so is she. But what can we do? We need the money from her job so I can't tell her to just quit. I'd sure like to tell the scheduling person what for! Jerk!
Done.

Man. I used to work for a place like that, and after leaving, I found out that re-scheduling like that is typically against most 'rules' in place by labor boards. Typically you need at least a weeks notice for your shifts, unless you have agreed to be on call and agree to the changes made. In my area, it's 2 weeks, typically.
Depending on the company (I won't ask), you should consider calling in to someone higher than the person scheduling and lodge a complaint. Don't settle for the: "Things change and people have to adapt because they need to" BS. I used to be given that run-around. When I started my new job (government) and spoke with the HR lady about previous problems at my last job, I was informed than many of their practices go against policies and labor codes in place to protect employees from unreasonable expectations.
Definitely raise a fuss, if you are able. That type of re-scheduling is unacceptable. A tweak here or there, yes, I can understand. Full re-scheduling.. That's not your girl's fault and she shouldn't have to put up with someone else's inconsistencies.

In CA you need to have 1 weeks sched. posted. If they decide to change if you technically dont have to work all they can do is ask you if you can work.

Be happy she has a job, there's quite a few people who'd kill to have a work schedule at all.

Agree 100%. Stressing over this is not worth your wife becoming disgruntled at work and losing that income.
It's just a day and it won't have any less meaning if it's celebrated a little bit late. Hell, I haven't celebrated my birthday in over a decade and I'm alive and kicking.

Set up something nice to do after work but at home

Surprise her and prepare a nice dinner for when she comes home from work...or plan something really fun for over the weekend.

Working retail, I can understand your wife's frustration. Been there plenty of times where I've gotten rescheduled. Just go with the flow and set up something nice. Besides, some of the best things are the ones that aren't planned out ahead of time.
