    Adult female tub

    Ok guys,

So I'm going to be picking up a big (almost 3000g) het clown in a couple weeks. She's going to lay within the next couple weeks and then she's all mine. Only thing is I don't have a tub big enough I only have a 28qrt rack. So my plan is to get a 41qrt and maybe put a UTH or heat tape for heat. What's a decent cheaper thermostat that I could get for this tub?

This has been covered quite a few times here but hydro farm makes a great cheap stat. Probably about $30 on amazon. It'll work for what you want but upgrading to a better one soon is your best bet. Good luck

I'd say for the money you're more than likely spending on a girl that size with those genetics, skip the Hydrofarm and get a Herpstat. The base models are far and above better internally for their components than the best Hydrofarm and it'd be money well-spent once, rather than buying one just to get another in the near future if you decide to upgrade. The Hydrofarms work and are fine for most things but were it me, I'd rather just spend the money once and get a top-quality unit that I could continue to use as my collection expanded. Just my two cents and obviously it's up to you and what you can afford. Congrats on the new girl; pics would be great when you get her!

Thanks. Since I plan on building an adult rack eventually I may as well just get a herpstat instead of wasting money on something else. I asked for some pics so I'll probably get some tomorrow. I'll post them up as soon as I get them. I'm super excited with this and got an AMAZING deal on her. He was getting rid of all his breeder females for 500 each didn't matter the morph. I was lucky to get her
    Thanks again.

I wouldn't get anything cheaper than a Ranco or a Johnson, anything cheaper and your better off with a lamp dimmer IMO-at least they don't fail and fry your snakes.

Also with a female that big should I get a tub with locking lid? Think she could pop a regular top off?

Yes, use a tub with a locking lid and use clips in the middle on the long sides.

Ok thanks. I figured one that big could break out but I wanted to make sure.

I've been using a hydrofarm for about a year with no problems. I use it on a melamine combo rack that holds 15qt and 32qt tubs. With 11 inch heat tape used for back heat, and ambient room temps of about 75, I don't see how it could burn a snake if it failed on. The surface of the heat tape only hits about 106 - 108 f max. I'm not saying that would be good long term, but i check my animals every day, at least twice a day. before i go to work, and when i get home.
That being said I also have a johnsons that I've used for years, and you cant compare the build quality. the johnsons is built like a tank. I have a herpstat that i use for my incubator, because its proportional. It keeps my incubator between 88.5 and 88.7 .

Id go with a herpstat or a VE-200. I have the 200 and love it. For what will be hatching out of that girl, im assuming some clowns, i wouldnt skimp out on the tstat. Id be watching over her like a hawk and make sure shes nice and comfy lol!
