Suriname Breeding Attempt - Looking good so far

Well, this is my first year trying to breed. I can answer almost any question when it comes to boa care and many genetics questions but when it comes to breeding, I am completely lost. Not to mention, my first breeding attempt has to include BCC's.

My BCI pairing doesn't look promising at all. There was some tail swelling, some copulation, but that is it. She was a little reluctant to feed last night for the first time ever, not sure if that is a good thing or not. However, if she starts showing anything more, I will create a thread just for them.

Back on topic, I put the Suriname's together the last week of December or the first week of January after an attempt at cooling. This cooling didn't happen like I had planned. I wanted to cool because I know Suriname's are more difficult to breed than BCI's. This is the first year I have had any issue with trying to keep my snake room cool in the winter. Usually, I am fighting the cold and have to turn my heat up to 80 degrees just to get it 75 degrees in their room. This year, I had my heat on 73 degrees and my snake room was getting to 85 degrees. Not sure what happened this year.

Well anyways, I put them together and he immediately started courting. I pulled the male out in about 3 weeks for feeding. Put them back together. He didn't court as much, maybe because he was trying to digest more. Then he went back to courting and in about 4 weeks I pulled him out for feeding. Now, he hasn't been pulled out in over a month for feeding because there hasn't been a good time to do so.

My female has become ultra aggressive. She never was aggressive before. She strikes the cage pretty often (however, it has been about a week since her last cage strike... knock on wood). If I open the door, she will strike at my face. Now, this was a female that I could open the door and she would come right out to me and climb up my arm. She was awesome like that. Now, she strikes at the mere presence of me.

First, I have to get on a stool to take these pictures so I can't ever seem to get the downward angle very well. Sometimes I will be on tippy-toes and the pictures still just don't show how large she is.

April 1: (She is definitely swelling some in this picture as she is ultra square looking usually)


April 10: (I am pretty sure they were copulating and now she is swollen in 2 spots)


April 14: (Definitely swollen but hard to see in the picture. She has scale separation but the picture just doesn't show it well)


April 15: (Now she is really swollen this morning - to me she is anyways) I was trying really hard to stand as tall as I could on that step ladder to take these pictures




So, maybe, just maybe, I will have some beautiful Suriname babies this year.
