What is the average cost of feeding a bearded dragon per month? Wife and daughter have wanted one for awhile but I'm hearing they can exceed $50+/mo to feed...

That's way too high. Depending upon the prices at your local pet store (for feeders) and grocery store (for veggies), I would estimate about ~$5 or less per week for a single or pair of dragons.

Of course, starting your dubia colony is really easy and gives you a free and highly nutritious food supply.

Starting your own roach colony is well worth your time.

Also, check local farmers markets for the best prices on not so pretty veggies. Humans are much more picky about how their food looks.

Buy veggies in season and freeze for when the prices go up. beware freezing greens, they will go all wilty.

Third vote for starting a dubia colony. Once you get it up and running, cost is very little. About $6 every couple of months.

When I was buying pet store crickets, I was spending easily $40+ a week to feed my juvie. If you buy in bulk, it shouldn't be too bad. A baby can (and mine did) devour 40-60 crickets a day, but that only lasts a year. Protein only makes up 10-15% of the adult diet, so even if you don't breed dubia or start a super colony, buying bugs locally becomes sustainable once they mature.
